Points to Consider When Renting an Instrument Renting a musical instrument can often be a challenging and potentially frustrating experience for parents. There are many instruments, brands, and rental houses to choose from when deciding on an instrument rental. Unfortunately, there is very little information available to assist parents in this decision process. At Cassell's Music, we have been renting musical instruments to students for many years. Instrument Brands The following brands are examples of musical instruments that have an excellent reputation in the areas of reliability, durability, and playability. Although rental instruments are often not new, they should always be clean, in a playable condition, and free from any serious noticeable physical damage. Damage/Theft Coverage Option Ask the rental company/agent if they offer a Damage/Theft Coverage Option. This coverage can be purchased for a nominal monthly fee and protects you from having to pay the full value for a damaged or stolen instrument. Typically there is a deductible that must be paid when processing a claim. Instrument coverage is often a wise investment when children are transporting instruments to and from class/school. Price of Rental Rental prices vary according to the type of instrument. For example, a saxophone can often be three times the rental cost of a flute. (This is due to the actual value of each individual instrument.) Most instrument rental companies will be competitive in this area. However, it is helpful to understand that the type of instrument being rented can have a significant impact on your monthly budget. Billing Policy It is important to understand how the rental company will handle the monthly billing of your instrument. Will you receive a payment book? Do they offer automatic credit card debiting? Is the rental company easily accessible by phone in the event of billing questions? Return Policy You should be aware of the instrumental rental company's return policy. How easy/difficult is it to return the instrument at the end of the school year? Ask about parameters in closing out the account. Vendor Reputation Finally, what is the reputation of the rental company/agent? How long have they been in business? Also, do the sales people appear knowledgeable and helpful? These are important points to consider when renting an instrument.
